Final Project Musings

5 Things I learned during this class.

During my time in Larry's typography class I learned many, life-changing things about typography that will forever rest in my heart and make me a better designer. These skills will help me for the rest of my life.

1.Type anatomy was the first thing that I learned.  Typography is not simple knowing how to make words look interesting on a page.  Type anatomy i knowing how letters are formed. No letter is formed equally and knowing the different names of the elements that combine to create a letter form have taught me to appreciate and understand each letter form even better than I did before.

2.In this class typographic guidelines was stressed, nearly everyday.  Helping me learn that each different font communicates in a different way and help a design fulfill it's purpose.  Grids within a typographic assignment is essential as they will help a design become more effective.  The most important guideline I learned is that hierarchy is a powerful design tool.  It can make or break a design, good hierarchy will make a design stand out among the sea of crappy design.

3.The favorite thing I leaned about in this class was logotype design.  I have always enjoyed logos and creating them with fun, witty design elements.  But in this class I learned that minimal design, with a simple, cohesive font can become a great logo.  A logo's number one goal is to establish  brand and not to be a flashy illustration.

4.also leaned about the rules of typography.  There are more than 20 but the 20 main guidelines should always be considered when creating any type of design and especially typography.  The rules of typography are made to be broken, but breaking too many of the rules just comes off as a witty concept more than an intelligent design.

5.The final thing I leaned is that sticking with the same design concept for every project (for example making every design witty minimalism) makes the overall design for the class seem boring and uninspired. It's better to explore more than one option to create more interesting designs.

Bonus.  I leaned that when Larry tells me to write 5 paragraphs about what I leaned in the class, he really means to write 5 sentences.  I also leaned that he will probably give me extra credit for writing so much, because I leaned so much in his class :)

5 Things I should have leaned.

1.Kelsey - I should have learned to single out text to make it more readable.

2. Bailey - I should have learned to incorporate more related colors in my designs.

3. Jane - I should have learned to use letter on a large scale to make my designs more interesting.

4. Devin - I should have learned to activate the negative space in the margins.

5. Aubree- I should have learned how to incorporate images into my designs.

5 Things I Refused to learn.

1. I refused to learn that white text on a black background is hard to read.
2. I refused to learn how to use scale to my advantage

3. I refused to learn to try new things after thinking of a concept.

4. I refused to learn how to make my designs flow.

5. I refused to learn how to use serif fonts
